REPS is endorsing a session proposal entitled “Strange New Worlds: Exploring Careers Outside of Archives” for NEA’s Spring 2016 meeting (Portland, ME, March 31- April 2, 2016). It will be a roundtable discussing the practical realities many archivists face in finding a position in the field and our experiences working in positions outside of archives (in a library, other cultural heritage institution, or other industry).
We are looking for approximately 3-4 participants for this roundtable who can represent some of the following experiences:
- new archivists looking for positions in archives while working in another area;
- people who have left the archives field for work elsewhere;
- those who are trying to or have succeeded in getting a position in an archives job after working outside the field;
- If your experience isn’t outlined here but you think it would be a worthwhile addition to the roundtable proposal, please don’t hesitate to suggest it.
As a roundtable participant you would prepare a short introduction and be ready to answer a number of questions from the moderator and the audience. Some of the topics up for discussion would be skill transferal, alternative career paths, what it means to call yourself an “archivist”, and support for job seekers in the profession.
